Your symptoms are only part of the picture
Periods, fertility, pain, digestion, sleep, stress, energy and hormonal changes rarely happen in neat little boxes.
When you come to Nurturing Life for acupuncture, the consultation looks beyond the symptom that brought you through the door. We spend time looking at your menstrual cycle, general health, sleep, digestion, stress, energy, medical history, lifestyle and the patterns you have noticed in your body.
The aim is to build a more complete picture of what is happening for you, rather than reducing your health to one symptom.
That broader approach is one of the reasons many women are drawn to Chinese medicine.
More than an acupuncture appointment
Acupuncture is part of what I do, but it is rarely the whole conversation.
Your appointments also give us time to look at the everyday factors surrounding your health. Depending on what is relevant for you, we might discuss sleep, movement, food, stress, recovery, menstrual patterns, routines and practical lifestyle changes.
I am particularly interested in the small things you do repeatedly.
Health is rarely changed by one perfect supplement, one treatment or one dramatic overhaul. Your daily habits create the environment your body has to work within, so part of my role is helping you identify realistic changes that fit your life rather than handing you an impossible list of things to do.
Women’s health changes throughout life
Women can seek acupuncture alongside conventional healthcare at many different stages of life, including while navigating:
- menstrual pain and difficult or heavy periods
- endometriosis-related symptoms
- fertility and IVF
- PCOS/PMOS
- PMS/PMDD
- irregular cycles
- cycle changes
- perimenopause and menopause
- pelvic pain
- fatigue and stress
- digestive symptoms
- sleep concerns
- persistent or complex health issues linked with your cycle
An individual approach to women’s health
Two women with the same diagnosis can have completely different experiences.
One person with endometriosis might be most troubled by menstrual pain. Another might be dealing with pelvic discomfort, digestive changes, fatigue and disrupted sleep. Someone going through perimenopause might be concerned primarily with hot flushes, while another is struggling more with sleep or changes to their cycle.
Your treatment plan is therefore based on your individual presentation rather than simply the name of a diagnosis.
Chinese medicine traditionally considers patterns across different body systems when developing a treatment approach. In modern clinical practice, this sits alongside your medical history, existing diagnoses, investigations, medications and other healthcare you may be receiving.
Working alongside your existing healthcare
Acupuncture does not need to be an either/or decision.
Many women who attend the clinic are also working with GPs, specialists, fertility clinics, physiotherapists, psychologists, dietitians or other health professionals.
Where appropriate, acupuncture can form one part of that broader healthcare picture.
I will also encourage further medical investigation or referral when symptoms fall outside my scope or warrant additional assessment.
Looking at what happens between appointments
An acupuncture session might last an hour.
The rest of your week matters too.
That is why lifestyle education forms such a significant part of the way I work. We can look at patterns that might otherwise be overlooked and identify manageable changes you can experiment with between appointments.
There is no expectation that you completely change your life overnight.
Often the most useful place to start is with one or two practical changes you can repeat consistently.
